Gun, ammunition and stolen cellphones found in car in Umbilo

Three people were arrested after a gun, ammunition and stolen cellphones were found in an unidentified car.

Three people were arrested after Umbilo police found an unidentified car with a gun, weapons and stolen cellphones.

On Friday night, the Umbilo Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling Clark Road, Umbilo when they noticed a dark grey Peugeot with no back plates, failing to stop at the traffic light.

The police gave chase, and with the assistance of other Crime Prevention unit vehicles, they managed to stop the car on Brand Road.

A search was conducted on the three occupants. The driver was found in possession of a licenced 9mm Glock pistol, 2 x magazines and 30 rounds of ammunition belonging to him.

The police also found six cellphones in the vehicle. When they checked the cellphones they found that three of the cellphones were taken at a recent armed robbery.

Further investigations were conducted and the complainant positively identified the vehicle and the suspects who had just robbed him in Umbilo and took two of the same cellphones from him.

A case of armed robbery was opened and the three suspects were detained at the Umbilo Police Station.

The suspects are aged 33, 32 and 34. The third cellphone was linked to a complainant who was robbed in the Berea area.

Police said the suspects will be profiled as there are more cases with same modus operandi.
