Murder suspects swiftly nabbed by Durban police

The suspects attacked a man with cricket bats after accusing him of stealing a cellphone.

THE swift response by police officers from Durban Central SAPS led to the arrest of two men who are being charged for murder.

According to Capt Muzi Maphumulo from Durban Central SAPS, on Wednesday, 21 October at around 2pm, a homeless man living in a tented shelter at the St Andrew’s Sports field in Durban was accused by the suspects of stealing a cellphone.

“The suspects attacked the man with cricket bats, and police officers responded swiftly after they were alerted. On arrival, the man was found with body and head injuries and was taken to Addington Hospital where he was certified dead. The two suspects were arrested,” said Maphumulo.

The men were taken to Durban Central police station for detention where they will be charged with murder. The suspects are expected to make a plea when they appear at Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 26 October.

In a separate incident, Durban Central officers arrested a man for robbery and assault (grievous bodily harm).  Maphumulo said the suspect had allegedly attacked a man with his own crutches, and robbed him of R280 cash.

“Police who were patrolling the area swiftly chased the suspect and arrested him. The victim was taken to Addington hospital for medical attention,” said Maphumulo.

The suspect is expected to appear at Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 October. “Durban Central police are doing all in their power to bring to book all those who transgress the law. Various operations which include vehicle patrols and foot patrols are made by our officers to keep the city safe from crime. The police are further appealing to the community to report crime,” he said.
