Durban Central police warns community of fraud cases

Residents are urged to buy vehicles from well-known dealers.

DURBAN Central SAPS is warning the community to be aware of fraud cases that have been reported during the month.

Sgt Zanele Khomo from Durban Central said most victims in these cases saw advertisements for the sale of motor vehicles on the internet.

“One complainant phoned the seller of a vehicle and made arrangements to meet. When they met the complainant was shown a vehicle which was parked nearby.”

“He made an arrangement to deposit money into an account to buy the vehicle, and once the deposit was made, the seller disappeared,” she said.

Khomo said in another incident, a man deposited money for a vehicle he saw on the internet and the buyer promised to deliver the vehicle, however after payment was made, the seller disappeared.

“Police are warning the community to buy vehicles from well-known dealers and to confirm details of the person assisting with financial documents before any payment can be made. The police urge the community not to deposit any money into another person’s account,” she said.

If anyone suspects any criminal activity such as this, they are urged to contact Crime Stop on 0860 10111 or their local police.
