New tradition for St Henry’s matrics

A NEW tradition was started at St Henry’s Marist College on Friday.

With the matriculants having had a very different year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Alumni Association and St Henry’s Marist Trust decided to do something to end the school year off on a happier note.

Each matriculant was given a form to fill in which noted what it was like to be at school during Covid-19, what the learner’s favourite memory was of being at College, something personal about themselves, and more, which was placed in a time capsule along with small trinkets, special items, flags and the valedictory mass programme.

On Friday, this time capsule was placed in the ground by the head prefects, Mfundo Cele and Eden Land, and each matriculant was able to place a handful of soil on top before it was covered over. This capsule will be unearthed at the learners’ 10 year founders alumni weekend.

Speaking about the tradition, College head, Dr Stephen Leech said time capsules were first placed in the ground in the 1700s, and it is estimated there are around 15 000 buried around the world today.

“This one is of profound importance to the matrics at St Henry’s. This is a year our matrics would rather forget, but it is also important to the matrics, as this is the year they finished school. This ceremony is held for them to reflect on what they take into the future, based on what they learnt this year,” he said.

Following the covering of the time capsule, matriculants were led in a war cry and the school song by spirit captain, Tori Oliver, and Alwande Ndwalane.
