Durban poet to shine at Poetry Africa

Thando Fuze is among the headlining the 24th Poetry Africa Festival.

DURBAN born author, poet and artist, Thando Fuze is among the headlining the 24th Poetry Africa Festival.

“Thando Fuze is human first before she is woman, before she is sibling, before he’s friend and business partner,” she said.

“As an artist I think there is a very thin line between the artist and the person, the one spills into the other most times.”

Fuze describers herself as a spoeken word poet who is also a published author with her anthology ‘With The Human’ being released in 2018.

The Durban University of Technology marketing graduate has perfomed throughout the country and shares her love for the arts with high school and university students through creative writing workshops.

Fuze said she does not have a specific genre she focuses on.

Her poetry ranges from politics, the scourge of gender-based violence, LGBTQI+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer, Intersex) issues and exploring love in all spectrum.

“I look around me, what is happening in the world, in my own circle, own life and I try to capture that in a way that people can be able to relate to and find something they can take home with them,” said Fuze.

For the first time ever, Poetry Africa will be hosted exclusively online due to Covid-19 fears. Fuze said she is looking forward with the new format and the infusion of more Durban poets.

“I’m also seeing a lot of younger poets in the line-up which is great because you get a wholesome experience of the festival,” she said.

Over 20 local and international poets are set to perform over the course of the 5-day event.

The festival will be run from 12 – 17 October and will be streamed for free on Poetry Africa’s Facebook page.
