Suspect arrested following Essenwood house robbery, shootout

An armed response officer was involved in a shootout with a house robbery gang.

A HOUSE robber was arrested yesterday morning, 30 September, following a shootout with an armed response officer from a local security company. 

According to Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS, at around 10.30am there was a house robbery in progress in Ashford Place, Essenwood. 

He said the armed response officer from PT Alarms was driving past when he saw a white Toyota Etios with five occupants parked on the road.

“As the officer turned into the road, the robbers saw the car and opened fire on him. The guard returned fire, then left his vehicle and fled into Essenwood Road.”

“The robbers reversed out of the road and fled. The guard took cover while still firing at the vehicle,” said Naidoo.  

The suspects fled and eventually crashed the vehicle at the intersection of Lena Ahrens and King Dinizulu Roads in Glenwood. 

One suspect was arrested on the scene. 

A laptop and TV were recovered in the vehicle.
