Creating health awareness among the youth

The Department of Health, Higher Health, Phakamani Empowerment, TB/HIV Care Association and SANBS spoke to students about health.

THE Department of Health, Higher Health, Phakamani Empowerment, TB/HIV Care Association, SANBS and other partners recently visited Coastal College Swinton Campus to create health awareness among the youth.

The group provided students at the campus with condoms, lubricants, contraceptives, Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PreP), and PEP, gave advice about healthy choices, and had dialogue with students about gender-based violence and mental health.

Phakamani Ndlovu from Phakamani Empowerment, based in Umbilo, said this was a Women’s Month initiative. “As part of Women’s Month, Phakamani Empowerment was there to share with students on what we specialise in, which is reproductive health and wellness education and awareness. Our Women’s Month theme is to condomise and be safe. No condom no sex,” he said.

He said the organisation also had a chance to pass on the same message to young women in the KwaNgcolosi community during Women’s Month.
