Tuinsig retracts 56 per cent rent increase notice

To assist in the current financial position, staff will be retrenched.

TUINSIG Centre for the Aged will no longer be increasing their rent but remain in financial difficulties.

“After the residents meeting on 4 September 2020, the notification regarding increase in rent has been recalled, but the financial situation at Tuinsig remains critical. We therefore call upon any donation or financial assistance from the community,” said Tuinsig in a statement.

Earlier this month, Tuinsig sent a notice to their tenants signalling their intention to increase their rent from R3400 to R6000.

A tenant who spoke to Berea Mail on condition of anonymity said the increase was exorbitant and would price many senior citizens out of the home.

Tuinsig reasoned that unexpected Covid-19 expenses had necessitated the 56 per cent increase.

In an internal letter sent to tenants, Tuinsig said they have suffered 33 Covid-19 deaths and have not been able to fill the empty beds left by the deceased.

“To assist in the current financial position, staff will be retrenched,” said Tuinsig’s management committee in the letter.
