Security guards escapes injury in Glenwood shootout

Investigations at the shopping complex revealed that three retail outlets, including a bottle store had been broken into.

A security guard narrowly escaped injury in a shootout during a robbery at a Glenwood shopping complex on Thursday morning.

The incident occurred while the officer was responding to a panic activation at the shopping complex, said Andreas Mathios, Blue Security community and media liaison officer.

“On his arrival he noticed two vehicles parked outside the complex and a third suspicious-looking vehicle parked on the corner nearby,” said Mathios.

“The two vehicles outside the complex sped off as he approached. As he accelerated after them, one of the vehicles slowed down and a suspect opened fire on the officer, firing three times in his direction,” he said.

Investigations at the shopping complex revealed that three retail outlets, including a bottle store had been broken into, said Mathios.

An undisclosed amount of alcohol was taken during the robbery. Umbilo SAPS are investigating the incident.
