Gardener shot in Berea armed robbery

The suspects pretended to be enquiring about a home rental, and once inside, one of the men produced a firearm.

A GARDENER, who tried to fend off two armed suspects, was shot in the leg during an armed robbery at a home on the Berea on Thursday morning.

Commenting on the incident, Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said the incident occurred when two armed trespassers derailed the front main gate and entered the property.

“Blue Security reaction officers rushed to the scene in response to a panic activation received,” Mathios said.

He said the suspects pretended to be enquiring about a home rental, and once inside, one of the men produced a firearm.

“A gardener working on site was shot in the leg when he attempted to intervene. The suspects fled in an awaiting luxury vehicle. One cellphone was taken during the incident,” he said.

Paramedics arrived to attend to the victim who, once stabilised, was transported to hospital for further treatment.

The homeowner required trauma counselling.

“Mayville SAPS attended the scene and investigations are continuing,” he said.
