Glenwood UIP makes spaces beautiful

The UIP is on a 'rampage' and is taking back its public spaces in phase two of its development.

GLENWOOD Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) has taken on place making and beautifying spaces in the area as part of a new phase of its development.

Precinct manager Vernon Stokes said many areas had been identified, and the area around the power station in Cleaver/Clark Roads was one of these.

“The UIP is on a ‘rampage’ and is taking back its public spaces in phase two of our development. The first phase was setting up, and now we are identifying spaces in the area for beautification. In our endeavours, we have appointed people to help with our projects,” said Stokes.

Progress made on cleaning up the corner.

He said for the clean-up project at the power station, Dave Nightingale was brought in to help. Stokes said the DV box, which was covered with graffiti, was cleaned and the wall has been cleaned and painted by Nightingale’s team.

“We cleaned rubbish and sand, and while busy, we discovered aloes were growing in the space. We decided to adopt this corner as our ‘boasting spot’, a show piece for the UIP. We got a landscaper in and have cleaned up the corner. We hope to put fairy lights up in the tree and get a spotlight installed, and at Christmas time, we can put up green and red lights,” said Stokes.

The Glenwood UIP has beautified the space outside the power station.

He said the next spot was the intersection of Cleaver and Che Guevara Roads. Nightingale has been hard at work cleaning up the corner, removing graffiti from the Telkom box and planting a garden at the site.

“Next up will be the Bulwer Park pergola at the entrance to the park at the intersection of Lena Ahrens and Alan Paton Roads. The wooden frame is rotten on top and this will be repaired. We will be taking on that corner to beautify it,” he said.
