West Street Clicks remains closed amidst EFF protests

The Clicks store on West Street has been closed for the second day as the EFF continues with its protests.

THE Clicks store on West Street, Durban, remains closed as the standoff between the health and beauty retailer and the Economic Freedom Party enters its second day.

Members of the EFF shut down the store yesterday as part of a nationwide protest against Clicks.

Vusumuzi Khoza, KZN EFF chairperson, said yesterday they would “turn the shop inside out” if they opened this week.

Meanwhile, Clicks has obtained an interim order against EFF members which blocks them from “intimidating and threatening” Clicks employees, Clicks customers and “inciting violence against the ordinary commercial operations” of Clicks.

The interdict however does not prevent EFF members from protesting.

In response, the EFF said they plan to continue their protests outside Clicks stores until 11 September.

“Our interactions with customers and employees have been peaceful, and we would like to advise all law enforcement agencies be it private or the state to read the court order carefully and appropriately to avoid infringing on our constitutional right to demonstrate,” read their statement.

The protests against Clicks comes after the store uploaded a racially insensitive advert on its website.

The advert showed a black female model with an Afro labelled as ‘dry and damaged’ alongside a white female model with blonde straight hair labelled as ‘fine and flat’.

Clicks has since removed the advert and apologised.

In a series of media interviews, Vikesh Ramsunder, Clicks Group CEO, blamed a junior staff member for the advert.

Clicks said 425 of their stores around the country were affected by EFF protests.
