Berea police protect themselves to protect the public

Bere SAPS has issued all operational staff and officers with face shields.

BEREA SAPS has taken extra precaution against the Coronavirus pandemic but issuing all operational staff and officers with face shields.

According to Sgt Trevor James from Berea SAPS, staff dealing with the public, including on the road and at the community service centre, will be issued with the face shields, which have been provided to the station by government.

“The members should wear these shields to protect themselves and the public against the spread of the virus, as all police stations are vulnerable to this. The station has closed once due to a case, and we don’t want to have to close again,” he said.

James said Berea SAPS was one of the few police stations which have only been affected by closure once during the pandemic, and he felt this was because of the fact that staff were taking precautions and adhering to the stringent rules of the Disaster Management Act.

“Staff are following protocols and taking precautions to ensure they are safe and don’t contract the virus,” he said.

He said in the next week, screens would be installed in the accident office, which is frequented often by the public, and counter screens would be forthcoming in the community service centre as a further precaution.
