Electricity vouchers for indigent households

Free basic electricity is electricity allocated to support low income households.

ESKOM is encouraging people from low income households to investigate free basic electricity (FBE).

FBE is electricity allocated to support low income households and is the amount of electricity considered enough to run basic lighting, basic media access, basic ironing and to boil water using an electric kettle.

If you qualify, you will receive a maximum of 50kWh or 60kWh per month, and anything above this limit will be charged.

The FBE vouchers are available effective from the first of the month and can be collected anytime during the specific month. Only one FBE voucher will be accepted by the meter during a specific month.

FBE is intended for indigent households, and applicability will be determined by the local municipality.

The municipality will include the household on the list of FBE beneficiaries (qualifying people) and then submit the list to Eskom. People can collect the FBE vouchers from Eskom vending outlets.

The vouchers will be issued every month.

To find out if you qualify, visit your municipal office, ask your ward councillor or community development workers or contact Eskom on 0860 037 566.
