Search for missing Durban fisherman enters second day

After searching for most of the day on Tuesday, emergency officials said it was now being regarded as a "recovery" search. The search was abandoned late on Tuesday due to strong wave currents.

The search is still on to recover the body of the sardine run netter who was washed away at sea on Tuesday.

After searching for most of the day on Tuesday, emergency officials said it was now being regarded as a “recovery” search.

The search was abandoned late on Tuesday due to strong wave currents.

The fisherman has been described as a 24-year-old African man. He cannot be named as of yet since his next of kin has not been informed.

Craig Lebanon, spokesperson for the National Sea Rescue Institute, said on Wednesday afternoon the police have not called them for assistance regarding the search.

“At 8.45am on Tuesday, the NSRI Durban duty crew were activated following a report of drowning in progress at Snake Park beach. On arrival at the scene, a search commenced for a local fisherman. He had gone missing after getting into difficulty with a surf during efforts to recover a sardine fishing boat on the beach,” said Lambinon.

“At low tide, it appears while attempting to recover the fishing boat, the man may have slipped of the shore bank before being caught in rip currents. Fellow fishermen had attempted to rescue the man before he disappeared under water. An extensive search revealed no sign of the man.”

Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, Durban Metro police spokesperson, said the search was still ongoing.

Every year, during the winter months of June and July, shoals of sardines swim upstream to the east coast to take advantage of the cooler winds.

In recent weeks netters have caught thousands of fish on Durban beaches.
