Berea’s race fanatics watch July from afar

Residents of Eden Gardens, Berea turned out to enjoy a high tea, hat parade and sweepstakes to mark July day.

THIS year marked a first for the 124th running of the iconic Vodacom Durban July (VDJ), courtesy of Covid-19.

The stands were empty and no roaring could be heard on the lower slopes of the Berea when the race took place last Saturday without spectators, beamed to screens, across the country.

Nevertheless, that didn’t stop the residents of Eden Gardens, Berea, from turning out to enjoy a high tea, hat parade and sweepstakes to mark the day at the retirement centre. Fun was had by all who donned their hats and smart attire to enjoy a ‘day at the races’.

The absence of face masks for the residents and social distancing was due to the retirement home having been under strict lockdown since the onset of level one for Covid-19.
