Umbilo land becomes a dump site

Black refuse bags are being dumped next to the community hall that is used for Scouting and as a church in Ray Keyte Place.

DUMPING on a piece of land in Ray Keyte Place in Umbilo has raised the ire of Kenneth Gardens Housing Estate residents, and is a major concern for the ward 33 councillor.

Black refuse bags are being dumped next to the community hall that is used for Scouting and as a church. Chairman of the 52nd Durban Sea Scouts, Mervin Christopher, brought the issue to the attention of Berea Mail.

He said it seemed residents that reside next to the hall were putting their bags on site, as they had been told by DSW not to dump their bin bags in front of the council buildings, but to dump them next to the Scouts Hall.

“It was noted that on the Friday the rubbish had been cleared, however on the Monday there was rubbish dumped on the site again. It seems to be an ongoing problem, but it also might be a case that Kenneth Gardens uses it as a black bag placement site,” he said.

Speaking to Berea Mail, residents said black refuse bags were removed from the housing estate and dumped on site, to be picked up later in the week.

The site where refuse bags have been dumped in Ray Keate Place, Umbilo.

A resident, who asked not to be named, said the rubbish piled up until the whole area was full, and not only was it an eyesore, but there was a huge issue of flies being attracted to the site.

“Vagrants also come and open up the bags, and leave rubbish lying all over, and it has started something, as it has also become a site for illegal dumping by others in the area. It is terrible, especially since it is next to the hall. This land isn’t part of Kenneth Gardens, and it isn’t a dump site. It is disgusting,” he said.

Another resident said this had been happening for the past two months after residents of Alberta Court got angry that rubbish was being piled up outside their block.

“It is unhygienic and we can’t open our doors or windows because of the flies. There needs to be another solution,” he said.

Commenting on the issue, the ward councillor, Mmabatho Tembe, said this was an issue that DSW and Housing should get together and fix.

“This isn’t a way to keep rubbish to collect a day later because it causes massive problems. I have contacted senior management of Housing and the head of DSW as this isn’t a sustainable solution and it is causing hygiene and illegal dumping issues. I have urged the two departments to come up with a more substantial way of how this can be dealt with, for example putting a skip inside Kenneth Gardens. I will follow up on this,” she said.

Residents are also urged to report illegal dumping to DSW on 031 311 8804 or email: DSW@durban.gov.za.
