Eight sentenced for public violence in Umbilo

It is alleged the men embarked on protest action blockading the road and preventing trucks from operating at Bayhead.

EIGHT men were sentenced for public violence in Durban Regional Court this week.

SAPS provincial spokesperson, Col Thembeka Mbele, said their sentence came after the court heard how they obstructed the traffic and caused public violence on Sydney Road in March last year.

“It is alleged on 25 March 2019 at 2.30pm, a group of men embarked on protest action blockading the road and preventing trucks from operating at Bayhead. Umbilo police as well as the Durban Public Order Police responded swiftly to the scene. A total of eight protesters were placed under arrest and charged for public violence. They made several court appearances to until their sentence,” said Mbele.

The court sentenced the men to R8 000 fine or eight months imprisonment suspended for five years.
