Extension of relief for Durban residents and business owners

Customers now have until 31 December to ensure that they settle outstanding debt, following the signing of the extension by Mayor Kaunda.

RESIDENTS and business owners can breathe a sigh of relief as there has been an extension for the Covid-19 debt relief that was meant to end on 30 June.

Customers now have until 31 December to ensure that they settle outstanding debt, following the signing of the extension by Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.

The special relief payment has also been amended.

Residential customers may enter into a payment plan agreement with the Municipality and pay between 10 per cent to 25 per cent of the capital debt, as a down payment.

Business customers are legible to enter into a payment plan agreement with the Municipality and pay between 25 per cent and 50 per cent of the capital debt, as a down payment.

According to the municipality conditions of this extension include that the customer may enter into a credit agreement with the Municipality on condition that the owing customer pays a stipulated down payment towards the capital debt (excluding interest) on or before 31 December.

The debt must be 90 days and older.

Total interest accumulated and raised to the customer account will be written of, and this will be re-instated if the customer defaults on the payment plan.

The customer is to enter into a payment plan agreement for the balance of the outstanding debt over a maximum period of 24 months.

There will be no interest raised during the period of the payment plan agreement, and existing customers on a payment plan may cancel the existing agreement and enter into this once-off relief.

This incentive is a once-off relief for the period beginning on 1 June and ending on 31 December.

Should a customer default on the payment plan with the Municipality, all interest written-off under the conditions of Covid-19 Special Payment Relief will be reinstated and the total debt (including interest) will be due for collection.

Customers based in Durban, who wish to enter into this payment relief may be assisted at the Customer Service centre at the Florence Mkhize Building, Durban CBD.
