Two DUT students test positive for Covid-19

Last week, the University of KwaZulu-Natal also confirmed a Covid-19 case.

TWO students from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) have tested positive for Covid-19.

On Wednesday, DUT reported their first student cases after five staff members also tested positive.

This brings the total number of infected people at DUT to seven.

“The university, via the relevant heads of department, have conducted contact tracing to alert people who were in contact with those who have tested positive for Covid-19. The affected physical spaces will be thoroughly sanitised,” read a statement from the DUT Covid-19 Response Task Team.

DUT joins the University of KwaZulu-Natal which also confirmed a Covid-19 case since the re-opening of tertiary institutions.

The Department of Higher Education and Training allowed universities to have a phased re-opening from 1 June.

Only 33 per cent of students are allowed to return to campuses, they comprise of final year students, students in the health sciences and those doing courses that are lab-based.

In a statement, DUT said they were worried some staff and students may not be adhering to the health guidelines of social distancing and wearing a mask at all times.

“We are receiving a number of reports that some students and some staff members are not following guidelines. Please, for the benefit of the entire university community, we urge you to abide by these guidelines at all times.”
