Spinning for charity

Colleen Trollip took on a seven-hour spinning challenge to raise funds for those in need.

DYNAMIC Musgrave resident, Colleen Trollip took on a spinning challenge to raise funds for charity.

On 16 June, Colleen took to her bike for seven hours in the Spinning for Siyabambisana challenge. Speaking ahead of the challenge, Colleen said she had had sleepless nights trying to think of ways she can help the less fortunate during this difficult time.

“Donations can be made to help little organisations, but I wanted to do something different and fun to raise funds for an outreach programme Siyabambisana, which means ‘we are together’ which was started to raise money to provide meals for workers during lockdown. I decided to do something crazy, and get as many people involved as possible,” said Colleen.

She had encouraged the community to support her, by making a donation, or sponsoring her per hour. On completing the challenge, she said the support she received was truly exceptional.

Cash donations raised amounted to R17 000 and product donations included 130 packets of fudge from Mari?s With Love in the Western Cape, 140 six pack of 500ml water from aQuelle, 100kg mixed dried beans from Plennegy in Greytown, who were also one of the cash donors and 90 knitted beanies from the charity knitting group in Durban, Beanies and Blankets for Babies.

“I spent Friday afternoon and Saturday with Siyabambisana, helping with food preparation and distribution. It was such a great privilege to be able to get involved, hands on, and assist. The money raised is going to go a long way, as, it costs about R2 500 per occasion when they hand out cooked food and other items to the community,” she said.

If anyone wishes to still donate, either financially, or with goods such as non-perishables, they can email blueyezblu@hotmail.com with the reference Siyabambisana, or contact 082 611 0597.
