Beware of opportunistic crime

Residents are warned about opportunistic crime following a break in at a building in Berea.

A RECENT break-in at a block of flats in Currie Road has prompted the building supervisor to warn other Berea residents to be aware of opportunistic criminals combing the area.

Speaking to Berea Mail, building supervisor, Thelma Hall, said the incident occurred at around 3.47am on Tuesday, 9 June. She said video footage showed two men as well as a white get-away vehicle driven by another man.

“That day, a bicycle was reported missing, however it was only six days later that anyone realised that a robber had gained access to a flat,” said Hall.

She said a resident had received a call from a man who had found her purse while out walking. She said everything was still in the purse, except for a bit of change which had been taken.

“When we viewed the CCTV camera footage, we saw what had happened. The woman then reported that she had noticed her window was open on the morning of the 9th, however she thought it could have blown open as she had heard nothing,” she said.

According to Hall, on viewing the footage, a man is seen jumping up above the driveway entrance to gain access to the resident’s window.

“He wasn’t a big man, and he had gloves on, and things on his feet. He was well padded, and got through a small window, without knocking anything over to alert the resident. He then went down and is seen throwing something over the driveway gate, perhaps the purse, and then lifting the bicycle over the gate,” she said.

Hall said the woman was told to report the case to the police. She explained that it had been years since there had been an incident at the building, and said they were now putting in extra precautions such as razor wire, to prevent any other break-ins.

“I am warning people in the area to be aware. Don’t leave windows open. We are well barricaded in this building and this man still got in,” she said.
