Durban Chamber reaffirms support for government regulations

Chamber president Nigel Ward said that the pandemic was an evolving crisis with the business community requiring more clarification from government on the way forward.

RESPONDING to the increased criticism President Cyril Ramphosa and his cabinet have come under regarding lockdown and disaster management regulations, president of the Durban Chamber of Industry, Nigel Ward, has reaffirmed the Chamber’s support for government as a whole and the manner in which it has dealt with the coronavirus crisis.

“The Durban Chamber urges the President to continue to be guided by the science and statistics around the pandemic in order to continue to avoid a greater humanitarian disaster in our country. We are encouraged by the positive and proactive engagement between the public and private sectors in KZN, who have shown that we are capable of working together quickly and with a singular vision in the best interests of our province and we hope that this trend continues well after this crisis has ended,” he said.

Ward went on to say that the pandemic was an evolving crisis with the business community requiring more clarification from government on the way forward.

“There remains a high level of uncertainty following the President’s address regarding the status of critical economic hubs such as Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town,” he said.

“With most of the country transitioning to level 3 by the end of May, we are still to gain insight as to which metropolitan and districts in the country will remain at level 4.  Some of the country’s metropolitan areas are economic hubs that contribute significantly to the economy, and we strongly recommend that government continues to consult relevant stakeholders and organised business to ensure decisions concerning the reopening of sectors are aligned to industry imperatives for the sake of the survival of our economy,” he said.
