City rolls out food, cash voucher project to families in distress

Not all wards will be receiving food hampers, some residents will also receive R600 vouchers to be used at their local stores.

The Durban Municipality is aiming to distribute 110 000 food hampers to distressed families across the city.

The project was set to commence on 6 May but was delayed due to logistical challenges. “We underestimated (the scale of the project), we thought this could happen in 2 or 3 days but it is a huge project and our trucks are assisting councillors to move the hampers to their respective wards,” said Mxolisi Kaunda, Mayor of eThekwini who was speaking at the distribution centre at the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre.  “All administrative processes of accountability have been made ready,” he said.

Kaunda said by Monday, all hampers should have been delivered to all 110 ward councillors in the city. Not all wards will be receiving food hampers, some residents will also receive R600 vouchers to be used at their local stores.

Mmabatho Tembe, Berea ward councillor, said cash vouchers are better than food hampers. “It is easier for us councillors and also for the families. WIth a voucher they have the option of deciding for themselves what groceries they need to buy or stock up on,” she said.
