Quick action leads to housebreaking arrests in Durban

Investigations revealed that the two men had been in the process of removing floodlights from the wall of the premises when they were interrupted.

The combined efforts of security officers, security guards and neighbours resulted in the successful arrests of housebreaking suspects in three different incidents over the weekend.

According to Blue Security’s Andreas Mathios one of its reaction officers was responding to an activation in the early hours of Monday morning when he spotted two suspects on the property.

When the two saw the officer, they jumped over a fence and attempted to flee.

One was apprehended in Helen Joseph Road and handed over to Umbilo SAPS.

Investigations revealed that the two men had been in the process of removing floodlights from the wall of the premises when they were interrupted.

In a separate incident, at about 6.30am on Friday, a suspect was arrested in Mayville and stolen items recovered.

Mathios said when security officers arrived at the business premises the security guard on duty pointed out where a suspect had been spotted making his getaway.

“The suspect was eventually discovered standing on a driveway gate behind the boundary wall and tree. He was ordered to get down, handcuffed and handed over to Mayville SAPS for processing. Items still in his possession at the time of arrest included a hydraulic jack, caps, a belt and calculator. Scrutiny of CCTV footage showed the suspect breaking into a vehicle on the property before he tried to evade arrest. The stolen items were also given to SAPS as evidence in the investigation,” he said.

In Glenwood, on Sunday morning, a resident activated the alarm when she realized three men were attempting to break into her garage.

“The suspects had managed to damage the door before a neighbour raised the alarm,” Mathios said, adding that officers combed the area and managed to apprehend two of the suspects nearby.

“The two men, as well as CCTV footage providing visual evidence, were handed over to Umbilo SAPS for further processing,” he said.
