#LockdownSA: KZNSA Gallery embarks on crowdfunding drive to stay afloat

As a registered NPO, the gallery does not qualify for an essential service permit.

The KZNSA Gallery in Glenwood is at risk of closure if it cannot raise enough money to cover its overheads.

The gallery has suffered a huge loss in revenue since the national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are an NPO (non-profit organisation) and because funding is so hard to access, we rely on income from our cafe and (craft) shop to keep our doors open,” said Angela Shaw, KZNSA Director.

“At the moment we don’t have any of the turnover from the cafe and shop trading that would normally pay salaries and bills.”

As a registered NPO, the gallery does not qualify for an essential service permit.

Shaw said this oversight in regulation could risk shutting down a lot of NPOs across the country which serve important functions in society.

She said they had approached the city of Durban, Department of Arts and Culture and other funders for assistance, but to no avail.

The gallery has started a crowdfunding campaign to raise $30 000, to cover costs for 3 months.

“The response has been so heartening. I’m amazed at the comments and support that has been coming through. I really do hope it continues, it’s the one thing we feel vaguely positive about,” said Shaw.

In the foreseeable future, the gallery is planning on opening an online shop. You can donate here.
