#SALockdown: Lunch programme serves children at home

Bringing the school lunch programme to homes

MANY South African school children rely on school lunch programmes for their daily meals.

With schools closed during the national lock down, Epic Youth Matters is bringing the lunch programme to the children’s homes.

Michelle Chetty, Director of Epic Youth Matter, a non-profit organisation that deals with the mental health of Durban school children, said they had delivered more than 50 food parcels to different families.

“We are now assisting during this crisis to get food to families of our children,” she said.

“We understand that it is hard for children to now escape their abusers as they are locked in with them so we also trying to counsel them online.”

Chetty said while it is difficult to carry out their normal counselling work, they found another way to help the children.

“We work in schools with young people and children, offering life orientation programmes that further lead to our work with girls who have become victims of abuse; offering healing, restoration and empowerment. Because we can’t prevent girls from being abused we work with boys also, offering a programme of healing, restoration, empowerment and prevention of boys from becoming perpetrators of abuse,” she said.
