David Captain, from Umbilo Community Police Forum, said he had witnessed a number of senior people being scammed or robbed at the ATM between 14 and 18 April.

“It’s around those pay dates when people get paid. I heard it is three guys and they operate in the morning and around lunchtime. The lockdown has made it easier for the crooks because the areas are now deserted and it’s easier to run away,” he said.

“They are targeting older people. My advice for people is that when you withdraw money, do not accept any help from anyone.”
Captain said he has alerted local authorities and security staff to be vigilant.
