Heavy rains, winds wreak havoc in Glenwood

With lockdown egulations in place, residents that have been hard hit by the rains are struggling to repair the damage to their properties.

HEAVY rains abd winds that lashed the Berea on Sasturday night have left a Glenwood family with over R150 000 worth of property damage.

Residents across the Berea region reported incidents of their roofs being blown off by strong gales , pools flooded and other property damages as a result of Saturday’s rains.

Shaylene Miller, a school principal, was one of the hardest hit as mudslides collapsed her entire side wall.

The mudslides also damaged her jacuzzi, flooded her pool and seeped into the garage reaching as high as the tyres on the car.

“We are devastated, the damage to our property is nightmarish,” said Miller with a sigh.

“We have to redo the whole pool. Right now we do not a have a security barrier and with a lot of vagrants on the streets now, our security is compromised.”

Miller said no one was hurt, their pets are safe and they are keeping a safe distance from the pool which is now covered in mud.

She said they had contacted a handyman to look at her pool but his work permit is only valid from Monday.

Heather Roos, Chairperson of the Umbilo Community Police Forum, said a lot of people were unable to purchase hardware supplies to fix their homes since hardwore stores are not considered essential during the national lockdown.

“These things are essential now, so it’s very unfair what the government is doing. It would be easier for people to fix their their homes now since they have time and are not going to work,” she said.

The rains also damaged part of the roads on Hastings Road.

Garrith Jamieson, Rescue Care Operations Director, said besides two vehicles stuck on water on Fracois Road, there were no other rescues.
