Durban’s Dept of Housing hands out anti-bacterial soap to residents

If anyone would like to donate soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, facecloths or sanitary items to the less fortunate, contact Councillor Smith.

STAFF from eThekwini’s Department of Housing, which deals with municipal housing across various wards, visited residents in Kirkwood Gardens and Westgate Gardens last week, along with ward 27 councillor, Ernest Smith.

According to Smith, the purpose of the department’s engagement with the residents of these municipal buildings was to ensure that the residents themselves also took part in combatting the coronavirus, by handing out antibacterial soap to residents.

“Residents were exceptionally grateful to receive these items from the municipality as the lockdown has rattled the community as a whole,” he said.

Councillor Smith said it was important for residents to report people in and around the area who are not complying with the rules of the lockdown.

This applies to people from all walks of life, from the homeless to people who are walking, running, walking their dogs or taking their baby for a walk in a stroller.

“The severity of this virus cannot be overstated as it already has hit our community in the hardest way as four of our senior citizens are now hospitalised with one fatality in the last few days. My condolences go out to the family as they go through this time of mourning and know that your loved one will be surely missed. I am appealing to the public, please stay at home and only go out if it is absolutely necessary. Combating this virus needs everyone to follow the rules the President and cabinet ministers have put down as well as report those individuals who are potentially exposing themselves to the coronavirus,” he said.

Smith said when reporting issues to Metro Police, the South African Police Service number 10111 or the municipality reporting lines, insist that you receive a reference number in order to assist him in escalating issues. Email: ward27@ethekwini.org or contact Councillor Smith on 079 214 0020.

If anyone would like to donate soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, facecloths or sanitary items to the less fortunate, contact Councillor Smith.
