One size does not fit all when it comes to buying a mattress

if you consider that on average a person spends a third of every day asleep, sleep comfort is therefore vital to stay happy and healthy.

Sleeping on the wrong mattress can not only lead to sleep deprivation, but can also result in lower back pain and further health complications.

With so many mattress options available, choosing the best mattress for your needs can be overwhelming as many factors need to be considered like weight, length, sleeping patterns, and comfort preferences. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when replacing your mattress.

Latex

These mattresses are recognised for their cooling properties and comfort. Latex is known for its grand responsiveness, comfort and bounce. Latex is, actually, a rubber, not foam, which is what gives it its resilience and durability.  Latex mattresses provide a traditional bouncy feel and strong support.

Pillow Top

Pillow Tops feature an extra layer of padding stitched on top of the mattress to look like an extra padding layer. A second section is sewn underneath to keep the top part in place on the mattress.

Memory Foam

This type of mattress reacts to pressure and heat and are designed to contour to the body, which may lead to pressure relief.. Some users find memory foam mattresses to sleep warm.

Innerspring

Made up of different thicknesses of steel coils and placed in different arrangements, air can easily rotate between the springs. Support and firmness can vary between the different innerspring mattresses, but generally provide strong support with a bounce feel.

Hybrid

With an innerspring coil base, the top layer can consist of memory foam, latex or polyurethane foam layers.  Great for sleepers who prefer a bit of everything in a mattress that provides a mix of softness and support.

Air
Air mattresses use an air pump to inflate the mattress to the desired firmness level. Typically, each side of the bed uses a separate chamber of air to accommodate two sleepers with differing preferences.

Looking after your mattress

The lifespan of a mattress depends on countless factors, but following best practices will ensure a longer life and many hours and years of peaceful sleep on it. Here are a few suggestions:

A solid base: A sturdy, solid base help to prevent mattresses sagging.

Protection: Good waterproof, breathable mattress protectors  help protect the mattress from stains and spills, body moisture and dead skin cells – factors that lead to dust mites accumulating in your mattress.

Fresh linen: Wash your bedding and mattress protector regularly. Always put completely dry linen back on the bed.

Keep it clean: Vacuum the surface and sides of mattresses every two months. This helps to rid any dust mites. Various products can also be used to eliminate odours before vacuuming,  but consultant the mattress manufacturer’s care instructions first.

Follow instructions: Many mattresses should not be turned and may only require regular rotation.

Always consult the care instructions that come with your mattress and if in doubt, contact your mattress supplier for advice.
