66 test positive for virus at Durban hospital

THE Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital has been embroiled in further woes as 66 people, including 48 staff members,tested positive for the coronavirus.

Last week it was confirmed that 11 staff members had tested positive for the Covid-19 virus following the death of three patients from the same virus at the hospital. Dr Richard Friedland, CEO of the Netcare Group, said they would screening and testing all staff and patients at the hospital. In the meantime, Dr Zweli Mkhize, Minister of Health, said the department was consulting with the hospital regarding closing certain sections of the hospital.

“We hope the fumigation process will start soon. We have also assigned specialists to the hospital. We must always be on the lookout. The infection can seep in from any institution. We must now trace all the contacts. It is a matter of serious concern and we are dealing with it,” said Mkhize.

St. Augustine’s is currently not taking in any new patients.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is currently trying to trace all patients who have been admitted at St Augustine since the 1st of March 2020.
