Off-duty Umbilo policewoman helps arrest mugger

The suspect allegedly attacked the woman, who was walking with her baby, before robbing her of her phone.

UMBILO SAPS arrested a man who had stolen a woman’s phone in Bartle Road on 23 March.

Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said at around 12.30pm she had been driving in Bartle Road in Umbilo in her private vehicle when she saw a woman lying on the ground and a man trying to strangle her.

A baby was lying next to her, crying hysterically.

“The suspect grabbed the woman’s cellphone out of her pocket and I stopped to see if she was alright. She was very traumatised. The suspect jumped over a wall towards the railway station and I followed and saw him get into a taxi on Sarnia Road. I stopped the taxi and told the driver what was going on. The suspect jumped out of the taxi and got into another,” she said.

Fortunately a police vehicle from Umbilo SAPS was patrolling in the area and Makaula stopped them and told them what was going on.

“They stopped the taxi, arrested the suspect and recovered the phone. The victim was contacted to retrieve her phone,” said Makaula.
