Mystery tap thief hits Durban library … again!

Despite the library being located on the 10th floor of the heavily guarded Liberty Towers Building, which is fitted with security cameras there is no catching the tap bandit.

A DURBAN municipal library has been robbed of taps three times in under a year.

The Don Africana Central Reference Library currently has no taps in their male toilet. The city has to replace them for the fourth time.
“Taps stolen the third time. Replacement in due course. Please bear with us,” reads a notice in the toilet.

Two handwritten replies are scribbled on the notice reading, “It’s unbearable!!” and “Baft anikahle (Come on guys).”

Despite the library being located on the 10th floor of the heavily guarded Liberty Towers Building which is fitted with security cameras there is no catching the tap bandit.
“We aware of the matter and when the theft of taps started, we immediately replaced them with plastic taps. This unfortunately did not deter the thief/s as the theft did not stop. Our staff regularly checks on the male toilets in order to try and stop the problem. We have not been able to catch the culprits,” said Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini Municipality’s Spokesperson.

Mayisela said the replacement taps cost about R50 each. The original taps that were stolen were self-closing metered taps which retail between R1500 – R2000. There is no indication that anything else has been taken from the library.
