Join the city nature challenge

The challenge is an opportunity to share biodiversity information, and for people in urban areas to help each other learn about nature.

iNATURALIST, an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information, is encouraging people living in Durban to take part in the 2020 City Nature Challenge.

The 2020 City Nature Challenge has over 250 cities signed up in more than 40 countries and is an opportunity to share biodiversity information, and for people in urban and metro areas to help each other learn about nature.

The challenge is split into two parts, an observation period which requires participants to take as many pictures of animals, plants fungi, insects and more in a four day period from 24 to 27 April, and an identification period where until 3 May, all observations should be uploaded and identified.

Don’t worry about getting the identifications correct, iNaturalist is a community-based platform and as long as the observation is given a common name such as grasshopper or plant, someone can find it and assist.

The challenge includes all sightings within eThekwini Municipality.
