Domino Foundation welcomes new team member

Glenwood’s Karen Brokensha joined The Domino Foundation’s Donor Relations team at the start of the year.

WITH a strong faith in God and natural empathy combined with a passion for people, it is no surprise that Glenwood’s Karen Brokensha has found a place in the Domino Foundation’s Donor Relations team.

After two decades in the events and hospitality industry, Karen began her journey into social justice in the role of programme co-ordinator at iThemba Lethu HIV Prevention Interventions in the Manor Gardens and Cato Manor communities. “Declaring destiny and purpose in the lives of the abandoned and vulnerable is priceless and rewarding.”

Describing herself as “a bit of a GI Jane”, but admitting the vulnerability self-sufficiency can bring, Karen says: “My years at iThemba Lethu and then as Youth Programme Manager at The Clothing Bank taught me that the perfection I demanded in myself and others didn’t help build a better team. Working with people who have altruistic mindsets has helped me grow in my resilience to face criticism. Loving myself and equipping others seem to go together.”

When the Youth Pilot Programme at The Clothing Bank came to an end in December, Karen put out the word that she was looking to return to the marketing and community partnership space. This was at the time that Domino Foundation was looking to grow its Donor Relations team. Karen has joined Tarin Stevenson who says of the new team member: “The Foundation and Karen have been long standing friends in the NGO sector, sharing insights, materials, learning from one another and strengthening our efforts for the collective good. It’s a joy to have Karen with her depth and wealth of knowledge which I look forward to gleaning from.”

Domino builds towards mutually-beneficial partnerships working towards social change in communities through education, nutrition and justice. In its seventeenth year and with a track record of investment in community upliftment, the Foundation constantly tests and measures its impact.

Shaun Tait, CEO of the Foundation says: “Domino is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and National Development Plans through our various social enterprise development initiatives. Corporate governance is key to the work we do – we are transparent and accountable to our stakeholders.”

Karen says that The Domino Foundation is on a mission to develop “a culture of giving”. Partners, donors, family, friends and beneficiaries all have something to give from their tanks of time, talents and treasures. “We aim to be pivotal in inspiring a community of people to do what they can with what they have!”
