Berea SAPS arrests man for opening false case

“People who open false cases cannot be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly."

DON’T open false cases with police. That’s the warning from Colonel Thembeka Mbela from provincial SAPS following the arrest of a man for perjury.

Mbele said it is alleged that on 26 February the suspect reported a carjacking at Durban Central, claiming he had been robbed of his vehicle at gunpoint by an unknown suspect.

“He made a statement under oath and an intensive investigation was conducted by detectives which revealed he had not been robbed of his vehicle, but that it was parked at Berea SAPS. The vehicle was being kept at the police station after the driver was arrested for being intoxicated on 26 February just after midnight. The man had been the passenger in the vehicle when the driver was arrested,” said Mbele.

Commenting on the case, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula, said: “People who open false cases cannot be tolerated and will be dealt with harshly. State resources are being wasted on false cases instead of focusing on genuine cases. All those who still continue to open false cases will be prosecuted.”
