St Henry’s learner completes first Dusi

Matthew van Niekerk took on the Dusi Canoe Marathon with his father Phillip.

ST Henry’s Marist College Grade 10 learner, Matthew van Niekerk, successfully completed the gruelling Dusi Canoe Marathon, paddling in a doubles canoe with his father Phillip.

Phillip is a veteran paddler who has completed more than 30 Dusi Marathons.

The weather this year was ideal and the father and son team were able to complete the course in a total time of 14h42min, placing 277 out of the 365 boats completing the race.

Matthew said that over the three days of paddling they fell out of their boat four times but were able to take on the series of confluence rapids on day two without falling out!

This was an achievement and a memory that both father and son will forever cherish.
