New roof for Tafta home

Tafta commends a company for getting a complicated roofing construction job right at an old aged home with minimal disturbance.

THE Association for the Aged (Tafta), a non-profit organisation based in Durban, is celebrating the success of a recent roofing replacement project conducted by DMT Roofing, at Tafta’s Cambridge Gardens complex.

This complex is home to 81 residents, all of whom are over the age of 60, and is owned and managed by Tafta in Morningside.

According to Tafta Divisional Manager Bernard Courtois, the project was a risky one as a decision was taken to both remove and replace thinning roofing tiles on the ageing building within a single day.

“Despite the seven-month duration of project, we made a promise to residents they would not be moved out of their homes which is a huge challenge for older people. Instead, a commitment was made by the crew that we would remove and replace roofing tiles within the day, and we’re thrilled to say that commitment was met,” he said.

The project focused on the replacement of two wings of ageing roof tiles of the Robert Storm building of the Cambridge Gardens complex, built in 1972 for Tafta by the Robert Storm Trust.

Following the success of the Robert Storm roof replacement project, the organisation has undertaken an even greater challenge; the replacement of all windows, and balustrades on their Kings Hall building in central Durban, which is home to 199 elders residing on 15 floors. The project will run until the end of 2020 and will see residents temporarily relocated to various floors as work is completed.
