Malibongwe Chiya's body washed up at Blue Lagoon Beach and a case of murder was opened for investigation.

A SUSPECT is in custody and is being charged with the murder of a man whose body was found washed up on the beach in February.

Capt Nqobile Gwala from provincial SAPS said on 18 February, a missing persons docket was opened at Durban Central SAPS after a man, Malibongwe Chiya, (33), went missing.

His body was later recovered after it washed up at Blue Lagoon Beach.

The body had injuries and a case of murder was opened for investigation.

Gwala said the initial investigation conducted revealed that the victim attended a party on 16 February where a fight broke out.

“Chiya was severely assaulted by known suspects and his body was thrown into the ocean. The Durban Central Task Team pursued all possible leads regarding the suspects involved in the murder and on 1 March the investigation led the team to Folweni where a 23-year-old man was arrested,” she said.

Gwala said more arrests are imminent as the investigative team continues its investigation. The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrates Court.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula commended the investigative team for cracking the case and tracing the suspect. “This arrest also demonstrates that you cannot escape the long arm of the law,” he said.
