Matric learners host successful conservation day

A fundraising Conservation Awareness Day was organised at Glenwood High School.

MATRIC learners Makaira Kerkhof of Glenwood High and Andile Zungu of Hillcrest High organised an inaugural Conservation Awareness Dayat Glenwood High School recently.

The matric learners met on the Ifa Lethu Tour, sponsored by the Johnny Lowe Memorial Trust, in 2019, and became friends over an exclusive black rhino sighting at the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve. The aim of the tour was to create awareness of conservation among the younger generation and to spread awareness. Guests from Crawford, Northwood and Hillcrest joined the boys at Glenwood High School, along with KZN Wildlife Honorary Officers and uShaka Marine Staff.

The boys recruited speakers that impressed them on the tour, Thug Haines, a specialist on legalising the horn trade for rhino survival, and Dr Peter Ardington, veterinarian and soil specialist. Haines gave an enlightening speech about Ifa Lethu and the benefits of legalised trade in rhino horn and Dr Ardington shared his passion for the preservation of soil for future generations.

The men were joined by Cath Jakins, campaign co-ordinator for Blood Lions and Youth for Lions, who held a discussion about canned lion hunting after a chilling screening of their film showing the devastating effects breeding for tourism, bone sales and hunting is having on lions.

The day was concluded with an entertaining talk by John Forrester, former Natal Parks Board head ranger for Hluhluwe, Imfolzi and Mkuze. The audience were treated to stories of adventures and close encounters with lion, buffalo and other wild animals.

Gifts were sponsored by Senqu and Uzwelo Bags, companies who support and endorse conservation in South Africa, and proceeds from the door were donated to the Blood Lion Foundation.
