Church celebrates as organ is restored

To commemorate the consecration of the church building in Umbilo Road 80 years ago, members of the Royal School of Church Music will be singing Choral Evensong on Sunday, 1 March.

ST Cyprian’s church at 603 Umbilo Road has reason to celebrate. Not only has the church organ finally been repaired and installed, but congregants are looking forward to celebrating the church’s 150th anniversary.

A number of events will be held throughout the year to celebrate the 150th anniversary, and to commemorate the consecration of the church building in Umbilo Road 80 years ago by the Lord Bishop of Natal, Leonard Fischer, members of the Royal School of Church Music will be singing Choral Evensong on Sunday, 1 March from 5pm. Refreshments will be available after the service.

Rector, Father Dane Elsworth, encouraged the community to go along to the celebration to enjoy the music and to hear the organ in action.

“We are happy to say that the organ is finally repaired after the devastation endured at the church due to crime, and it is even better than before!” he said.

The church made the news at the end of 2018 after thieves stole copper plating from the roof. With the plates removed, the church building was left at the mercy of the elements, and rains caused R2.2 million damage to the inside of the church building and the organ. Work on repairs to the roof started at the end of March 2019 and were completed in September.

The church now has an enhanced pedal organ with added bell chimes, which were donated by Roy Louw from an old cinema organ, and a total overhaul and tuning had been done. The organ is now in the big Organ League and is a good recital instrument for future use.
