Durban teacher launches virtual classroom app

The app is described as being the answer to the fourth industrial revolution.

TO keep up with the digital evolution, veteran Durban teacher, Dr Tholsia Naidoo has launched a one-of-a-kind application that acts as a virtual classroom.

I-whiz, according to Naidoo, is education’s answer to the fourth industrial revolution.

Naidoo explained that due to overcrowding classrooms and poor results in key subject areas, there is a greater need for accessible supplementary support.

“If it makes life easier for teachers, why not (because) our education system cannot carry on the way it is now,” she said.

“The 4ir has the potential to raise global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world. It is our mission to revolutionize education the 21st century and beyond.”

The application has 3-minute animated videos covering relevant curricula for Grade R to matric. There are also quizzes and tests that determine the learner’s understanding of a particular subject.

There is an annual subscription fee of R200.

Naidoo said she spent two years writing up the original content.

During the launch, She was asked how the application would help learners with subjects that contain essay and creative writing.

Naidoo said they were still working on creating an AI-generated response teacher that would help for topics of subjectivity.

“If it’s an argumentative essay for example, it teaches you exactly the steps you use. It takes an example and breaks it down to say ‘look how this one does it, this is how to start an introduction’. We are hoping the child can emulate that,” she said.

Vee Gani, Chairman of the Parents’ Association KZN, said such an application enhances the social interaction between a teacher and a learner.

“What is important is that when children develop an affinity for an app like this, it can assist them so it’s not taking the teacher away from the classroom or replacing that, it is to complement what is happening in the classroom,” he said.

The app is available for download on all play stores.
