Protests continue at UKZN

The School of Law sent a message to its students postponing their lectures after the Student Representative vowed to continue protesting.

REPORTS of unrest at Howard College spread on Monday as the university prepared to resume its academic programme today.

The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) suspended its academic programme last week Monday to meet with student leadership following weeks of unrest.

However, the meeting did not end successfully with university management refusing to back down from its 15 per cent historic debt policy and students vowing to intensify protests.

The university requires students to pay 15% of their historical debt before they are cleared to register.

In a communique released during the weekend, UKZN said all academic activities would resume at the university on Monday while talks between the management and the Student Representative Council (SRC) continue.

Nevertheless, the SRC also released its own statement vowing to continue protests.

This led to the School of Law unilaterally postponing lectures today.

“In light if the statement by the UKZN SRC and our concerns for the safety of both lectures and students during lectures, the School of Law will not be conducting lectures tomorrow (17 February),” said a communique sent to law students.

The situation at Howard college remains volatile with reports of separate incidents of protests.
