What you need to renew your car licence at the Post Office

The Post Office gives advice on what to take when you need to renew your car licence.

THE renewal of vehicle licences is proving to be one of the biggest success stories at the Post Office with more than three million vehicle licences renewed at post offices countrywide over the past year.

The KZN Department of Transport has certain requirements which motorists have to comply with to renew their vehicle licences.

Proof of address is required and municipal bills are perfect for this, and do not have to be certified by the police as genuine.

The Post Office will accept a printout of a PDF municipal bill.

Other documents that are acceptable as proof of address are a bank statement, utility account, clothing, furniture, cellphone or Telkom statements, medical aid statement, recent signed lease agreement, recent signed insurance policy agreement, and councillor’s letters for clients who stay in informal settlements as well as rural ‘locations’ and RDP houses. These documents must not be older than three months.

Documents that cannot be accepted as proof of address are SARS documents, a lease agreement older than three months, policy documents older than three months, Multichoice and internet invoices, invoices, any document that you receive in the mail that is a once-off advertorial or councillor’s letter if a client stays in a suburban area and/or urban township.

An affidavit to confirm your address is perfectly acceptable. Tellers at licensing counters have copies of affidavit forms that can be completed by the client attesting proof of residence. All Post Office tellers are Commissioners of Oath and can assist clients in this regard.

Bank cards are accepted as payment methods for vehicle licences; in exceptional cases, a pin pad may be off line and in that case the teller will request the customer make a cash payment.

Customers are reminded that Motor Vehicle Licence counters close 30 minutes before operational hours.
