Police seek information in rape cases

Police are looking for information related to five cases of rape in and around Durban over the past few months.

DURBAN Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is appealing to the community for assistance and information regarding cases of rape it is investigating.

In a case on 25 August last year, it is alleged that at around 3am, a 24-year-old woman was sleeping inside a room in Gillespie Street, Durban, when she was raped by her boyfriend’s friend.

Police believe the male they have an the identikit of can assist in solving the case. Anyone with information can contact Det W/O Muthusamy on 031 325 4121 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central said there were another two cases within a day of each other in November.

“It is alleged that on 14 November at about 6pm, a woman was walking with her friend in St George’s Street, Durban, when they were approached by three men. One the men pointed a knife at her and her friend, and two of the men raped her. Police believe the men they have identikits of can assist in solving the case,” she said.

Khomo said in a case on 15 November, it is alleged that at around 11.30pm, a 21-year-old woman was walking in the Morningside area when she was offered a lift near City View Shopping Centre. “The driver and his passenger raped her and assaulted her. She did not manage to take down the vehicle registration,” said Khomo.

In a case on 16 December, Khomo said at around 7.10pm a 26-year-old woman was on her way to work, and along the N2 near Gateway Bridge she was approached by a man who pointed a gun at her and demanded cash. “The victim gave him her money and two cellphones, however he then raped her, saying it was because she only had a little money. He then ran into the nearby bush,” said Khomo.

In a fifth case on 28 December at about 3.30am, a 19-year-old woman was walking on Wolseley Road to her home when she was approached by an unknown male.

“An unknown man grabbed the victim, pulling her to the side of the road and forcefully raped her,” said Khomo.
