Durban’s Denis Hurley Centre looks back on successful 2019

The Denis Hurley Centre looks back on 2019 and budgets for 2020.

COMMITTED staff, solid partnerships and generous volunteers and donors helped make 2019 a successful year for the Denis Hurley Centre.

Looking back at the year just passed, Director of the DHC, Raymond Perrier, said: “We look back on the continued work of our clinic which helped almost 30 000 patients last year and our feeding programme which served almost 100 000 meals. We are pleased by the extra successes such as the election participation programme, the award-winning Street Lit project, the opening of the Napier Centre 4 Healing, and the second year of our Face2Face café.”

Raymond said all of this was achieved because of committed staff, great partnerships, generous volunteers and donors, and cash.

“We still have to pay bills like everyone else and, of course, those costs increase every year. Despite doing more work in 2019 and giving salary increases in line with inflation, we still managed to keep our 2019 expenses at the same level as 2018. Moreover, our budget plans to do the same for 2020. But that still means we need to raise at least R4.7 million in 2020 which works out to R13 000,” he said.

Raymond said the DHC needed help from the public to assist by supporting the DHC in various ways to help its work to continue.

“People can pledge to cover our costs for one day as a memorial for a friend or family member, make a personal or corporate donation before the end of February and reduce your 2019/20 tax bill, donate the equivalent of your monthly medical aid spend as an annual gift to fund our clinic – R2 400 or R200 per month, enables us to see 40 patients in a year. If you are receiving an annual pay increase, consider donating some part of that to the DHC,” he said.

Raymond said more on the financials will be shared at the DHC’s Annual Stakeholders’ Meeting planned for 2pm on Saturday, 8 February.
