Durban student protesters granted bail

A total of nine students appeared in court for public violence following student protests at Durban universities.

NINE students appeared in the Durban Magistrate court on Tuesday, 28 January on charges of public violence.

Two University of KwaZulu-Natal students, Nkululeko Khanyeza, 23 and Maybe Guleni, 21, were arrested during the student protests at Howard College on Monday.

They were released on R500 bail each and are set to appear again on 8 April.

Mphathi Majola, Chairperson of the Economics Freedom Fighters Student Command at UKZN, said the students were unfairly arrested as they were not the ones throwing rocks at the private security.

Students from the Unisa campus in Durban, held a protest outside court to support the seven Unisa students who were arrested on Monday during protests at the Durban campus.

All seven female students, were released on R500 bail and will appear again in April.

Lungile Nhlenyama, Unisa Provincial Student Representative Council President, said they were still waiting for university management to respond to their demands.

“Those students wanted to finalise their registration, they wanted to be unblocked because they cannot see their results and are not able to register,” she said.
