Berea police arrest wanted suspect

When police realised that the man was in the Berea area, an operation was immediately conducted and he was arrested.

ONE of the police’s most wanted men was arrested in the Berea on 22 January.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele said when police were alerted that the man was in the Berea area, an operation was immediately conducted. The suspect was confronted by police officers from various units and subsequently arrested. Police found a 9mm pistol with 30 rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Mbele said the suspect, who has been on the run from police, was wanted for theft of motor vehicles, murder and robbery committed in Umhlali, Montclair, Umsunduzi, Mpumalanga, Inchanga and Durban Central. He is set to appear in court soon and is suspected to be linked to many taxi-related incidents in the province.

Mbele said one case was opened on 27 February 2009 where a woman’s car had allegedly been stolen. A case of theft was opened at Mpumalanga police station for investigation.

On 5 November 2018, a 41-year-old man alleged that he had been held at gunpoint by two men in Fredville. The men made off in the man’s vehicle, a Toyota Quantum. A case of carjacking was opened at the Inchanga police station for investigation. The vehicle was later recovered at Cliffdale.

In another incident on 9 March 2019, Sibusiso Shozi and Sibonelo Mazibuko were driving through Mobeni when a man open fire on them before fleeing the scene. The two victims were found inside their vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds and were certified dead at the scene. Charges of murder were opened at Montclair police station for investigation.

Sandile Ndimande and Mthoko Ndimande were in Mkhizwana in Umsunduzi on 29 August 2029, when suspects who were driving a Toyota Quantum forced them into the taxi. They drove off and the two men were later found dead with gunshot wounds. Charges of murder were opened at the Umsunduzi police station for investigation.

In another case on 23 September last year, 29-year-old taxi owner Dustin Pillay was in Shakaskraal when a white Jeep with two occupants opened fire on him, fatally wounding him. The suspects fled the scene and a case of murder was opened at Umhlai police station for investigation. Mfanufikile Dlamini was also recently arrested in connection with this case and has appeared in court.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula has commended the police officers for arresting the suspect. “We are pleased that the suspect has finally arrested and we are certain that he will remain behind bars for long period,” he said.
