Stash of ammunition found at Umbilo house

The police unearthed an ammunition cache at a property in Umbilo on Wednesday, 8 January.

AN inquiry has been opened for investigation at Umbilo SAPS after police unearthed an ammunition cache at a property in Umbilo on Wednesday, 8 January.

According to reports, police were called to the residence in Evans Road by the Sheriff of the court.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the Sheriff was there to hand the resident an eviction notice and remove property as he had not been paying rent.

“The man was not at the property at the time, and while the Sheriff was taking items out of the house, the police discovered multiple components of bullet reloading set-up. A total of 668 various types of ammunition, 3840 bullet casings, gun powder and three fake passports were discovered in the basement and a rifle was also recovered. “

Gwala said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the man had previously been charged for possession of explosives and ammunition and was out on bail.

An inquiry was opened for investigation at Umbilo SAPS and the police are searching for the man.
